Vaughan Williams' sense of nationalism and patriotism manifested itself in a variety of ways. In addition to examples such as the bugle call in the second movement of the Third Symphony are the pieces written after the war for military band. Having collected over 800 folk songs in his lifetime, it is not surprising that his first band piece was the English Folk Song Suite written in 1923. He served as a committee member, vice president, and president of the Folk-Song Society in England between the years 1909 and 1927. Throughout his career he collected over 800 folk songs and incorporated them into his compositions. Known as a prominent English composer, Vaughan Williams composed for both band and orchestra, and other notable works include nine orchestral symphonies, Variations on 'Dives and Lazarus' (for orchestra, but the “Dives and Lazarus” melody is used in the English Folk Song Suite ), Tuba Concerto (the first solo for tuba by a major composer), Toccata Marziale , and Flourish for Wind Band (the latter two are composed for band).
